While aging can take a toll on our skin, thankfully there is facelift surgery can make the skin look and feel younger and vibrant. If you are experiencing altered shape and appearance of your face because of normal age-related changes, this article can be a good source of information on the surgical facelift that you must be aware of.

What is facelift surgery?

Facelift surgery (medically termed Rhytidectomy) is an extensive aesthetic procedure designed to reduce the prominent aging effect on the face. It is commonly reserved for people who are above 60 years of age but in recent years, young adults are continuing to gravitate towards surgical facelifts. Generally, its effects can be expected to last for 10 years.

How is facelift surgery performed?

Facelift surgery is performed under general anesthesia and sometimes local anesthesia or sedation must be given to the patient. It may last for about 2–4 hours. The procedure involves making incisions to a pulp back a skin flap and tightening the underlying facial muscles and tissues. In a traditional facelift, the cut is made from the temples in the hairline extending down and around the front of the ears and ending behind the ears in the lower scalp. If the neck is being treated, a chin incision is made. The subcutaneous facial fat may be removed, sculpted, or redistributed. Once this is done, the facial skin is redraped over the newly-contoured face. The excess skin is excised and the incision sites are stitched or closed with surgical tapes.
